Melissa Sheppard
I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) in Maryland with over 16 years of experience in the mental health field, including 7 years as a licensed therapist. My practice focuses on supporting adults who have experienced trauma, major life transitions, and challenges related to stress, anger, self-esteem, relationships, anxiety, and depression, as well as recovery from addiction. I am passionate about my work and strive to create a collaborative, non-judgmental environment where each individual feels heard and valued. I have successfully helped clients develop new coping strategies, empowering them to navigate their personal journeys and achieve meaningful growth and healing.
How would you describe your approach to care?
My approach to therapy is rooted in compassion and acknowledgment of each client’s unique experiences. I utilize a holistic approach that includes trauma-informed care practices, ensuring that clients feel safe, respected, and empowered throughout their healing journey. By employing evidence-based interventions, I tailor my methods to meet individual needs, fostering a collaborative environment where individuals can explore their thoughts and feelings. My goal is to create a supportive space that encourages open dialogue, enabling individuals to engage fully in their personal growth. I am committed to supporting individuals in developing coping strategies, identifying strategies that are no longer working, improving life satisfaction, and achieving their goals. I also believe that a bit of laughter is a helpful part of the healing journey and include humor when I can during sessions.
What should be expected in the first session?
In our initial session, we will take the opportunity to get acquainted and explore what led you to seek therapy. This will be a relaxed and supportive conversation, where you can share at your own comfort level. We’ll discuss how the therapy process works and what you can expect moving forward. We will discuss what goals you have for therapy. Questions are welcomed and my main focus is to ensure that you feel comfortable as we embark on this journey together at your own pace.
